What the tools are, what each one can and cannot prove, and why a finding is only trusted when more than one method agrees.
Every tool in leak detection is good at one thing and blind to something else. A company that owns one tool will find the leaks that tool finds and miss the rest. The method matters more than the brand of the equipment.
A hydrophone is a microphone that works underwater. Water escaping under pressure makes a distinct sound, and a hydrophone placed at each fitting can hear it. Above ground, a ground microphone listens for the same signal transmitted up through soil.
Limit: acoustics need signal and quiet. A pump running nearby, traffic, or a leak under thick concrete can bury the sound. Acoustic silence is not proof there is no leak.
Each plumbing run is isolated and pressurized on its own through a custom-built manifold. A line that will not hold pressure has failed somewhere along its length. This is the method that converts "the pool leaks" into "the suction line from the skimmer leaks."
Limit: it identifies which line, not where along it. That is what locating and acoustics are for.
Underground plumbing is mapped electronically before anything else happens underground. Listening along a guessed pipe path produces guessed results, and excavating along one produces expensive results.
Dye released near a suspected crack or fitting under still water moves toward an active leak visibly. It is direct visual confirmation, which makes it excellent evidence for a report.
Limit: it only works where a leak can be reached and the water can be stilled. It confirms a suspicion rather than surveying a whole pool.
A hydrogen-nitrogen or helium mixture is introduced into a drained, isolated line. The gas escapes at the break and rises through soil and concrete, where a surface probe detects it. Gas does not care about pump noise and it travels through material that stops sound.
Few companies in the region operate a full trace gas system. Leak and Subsurface Locators is regularly called by other pool leak detection companies to assist on underground locates their own equipment could not resolve.
A single positive result is a hypothesis. A pressure test that fails on one line, an acoustic signal at a specific point on that line, and trace gas confirmation at the same point is a finding. Repairs get made on findings, because a repair based on a hypothesis is just an expensive test.
