A pool leaking an inch per day can waste 300 gallons daily, thousands per month. If the autofill is keeping the pool topped up, the loss goes straight to the meter and shows up on your bill.
Call (954) 290-5177, Free Estimate →A high water bill with a pool is most often caused by an autofill that is continuously compensating for an active pool leak. The autofill keeps the pool at the correct level, hiding the leak from view, but every gallon that escapes is replaced through the water supply and registered on the meter. A pool losing even half an inch per day can add thousands of gallons to the monthly water bill.
The numbers vary by pool size, but here is a general reference for a standard 12x24 pool (approximately 14,000 gallons):
| Daily Loss | Approximate Daily Gallons | Approximate Monthly Gallons |
|---|---|---|
| ¼ inch (normal evaporation) | 75–100 gallons | 2,250–3,000 gallons |
| ½ inch (possible leak) | 150–200 gallons | 4,500–6,000 gallons |
| 1 inch (clear leak) | 300–400 gallons | 9,000–12,000 gallons |
| 2 inches (significant leak) | 600–800 gallons | 18,000–24,000 gallons |

Evaporation Calculator → Leak Analyzer →The water bill is often what makes a homeowner call, not the pool level, because the autofill is hiding that. They get a bill that is $60, $80, $100 more than usual and they start tracing it. They turn off irrigation, check the washing machine, look for drips in the house. Everything checks out. Then someone mentions the pool.
Turn the autofill off for 24 hours. If the pool drops more than a quarter inch, call us. The water bill stops climbing the day the leak is fixed.

If turning off the pool autofill does not account for the full billing increase, check the irrigation system next, especially any zones that run overnight when you would not notice a break.
Some South Florida water utilities offer leak adjustment credits for residential customers who repair an identified leak. Contact your utility provider directly, we cannot advise on individual utility policies, but some do offer this accommodation for documented repairs.
The autofill stops compensating as soon as the leak is fixed. The water use drops back to normal immediately. The improvement will be visible in the billing period following the repair.
