Henry Flagler's development of Palm Beach and his Florida East Coast Railway created the city as the mainland town serving the island resorts. Clematis Street became its historic downtown, the Norton Museum of Art opened in 1941, and today the city is the county seat with more than 117,000 residents.
West Palm Beach exists because of what sits across the water. When Henry Flagler pushed his Florida East Coast Railway south and built grand resort hotels on Palm Beach Island, he needed a mainland town for the workers, merchants, and services that kept the resorts running. That town incorporated on November 5, 1894, two years before Miami, making West Palm Beach the oldest incorporated municipality in South Florida.
The relationship across the Lake Worth Lagoon defined the young city. Palm Beach was the resort; West Palm Beach was the working city that built it, fed it, and staffed it, and it quickly grew into a commercial center in its own right.
Clematis Street has been the city's downtown corridor since its earliest years, running from the waterfront into the heart of the city. Its endurance earned formal recognition in 1998, when the Clematis Street Historic Commercial District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today the street anchors a downtown that also includes The Square and the city's waterfront commons.
West Palm Beach also carries deep African American history, from the early worker communities who built the resorts onward. Historic neighborhoods like Flamingo Park, Grandview Heights, and Northwood preserve the housing stock of the city's early booms, and their historic-district status shapes renovation and property decisions to this day.
The Norton Museum of Art opened to the public in 1941 and grew into one of Florida's leading art museums. The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts added a major performance venue downtown. In recent decades the city has layered on Brightline and Tri-Rail service, an international airport next door, and waves of downtown residential towers, while remaining the county seat and government center of Palm Beach County.
Our company is based in West Palm Beach, so this history is the ground I work on. A city that started in 1894 has plumbing eras stacked on top of each other, historic-district homes with pools added in the 1960s, mid-century neighborhoods, and brand-new construction, sometimes on the same block.
