Direct Answer

A standard pool leak detection visit takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours for a pool without a spa. A pool with an attached spa takes 2.5 to 3 hours because the spa adds plumbing circuits, fittings, and surfaces to test. When underground pipe locating with acoustic equipment and trace gas is needed, the visit can run 3 to 4 hours. The pool must be clear of swimmers and the water must be clear for the full visit.

Jeff David, Leak and Subsurface Locators

I do not rush a leak detection visit. The dive inspection alone takes 30 to 45 minutes when done properly. If I spend 20 minutes on a pool and hand you a result, I have not tested everything, I have looked around and made a guess. That is not what you are paying for.

When I tell homeowners to block out 2 hours, it is because the job needs 2 hours. A thorough visit that confirms the source is worth more than a fast visit that misses it and sends you back to square one with a second call to someone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the pool the same day as the detection visit?

Not during the visit, the pool needs to be clear of swimmers for the full duration. After the visit is complete and findings are explained, normal pool use can resume unless a repair is being done that day.

Does the time include the repair?

Detection and repair are separate. The visit time covers finding the leak. If a same-day repair is possible, that time is in addition to the detection visit. Some repairs take 30 minutes. Others take several hours. We discuss timing on the spot after the leak is found.

What if it takes longer than estimated?

We quote flat fees for most residential detection visits, not hourly rates. If the job takes longer than expected because it is a more complex pool or a more complicated leak, you are not watching the clock and paying more. The price quoted is the price.
