Skimmer separation is one of the most common pool leak sources in South Florida. The skimmer body separates from the pool shell at the bond creating a gap. Water drains to the level of the skimmer throat and stops. Confirmed by dye testing during underwater inspection. Repaired by sealing the separation or replacing the skimmer. Can a Pool Skimmer Cause a Leak?

Yes, skimmer separation is one of the most common pool leak sources in South Florida. The pool drains to exactly the skimmer level and stops. Here is why it happens and how we confirm it.

Direct Answer

Yes. Skimmer separation is one of the most common pool leak sources we find in South Florida. The plastic skimmer body gradually pulls away from the concrete pool shell at the bond between them, usually from soil movement, age, or repeated thermal expansion and contraction. Water drains through the gap until the waterline drops below the skimmer throat, at which point the leak effectively stops. The pool always stabilizes at the same level: the bottom of the skimmer opening.

Why Skimmer Separation Happens

Pool skimmers are plastic. Pool shells are concrete. These two materials move differently with temperature changes, soil movement, and the stress that comes from years of water pressure and ground settling. In South Florida's sandy soil and high-water-table environment, the ground around the skimmer shifts with the seasons. Over time the joint between the plastic skimmer body and the concrete shell develops a gap, often invisible from above the waterline but clearly visible during an underwater inspection.

Older pools built in the 1980s and 1990s are especially prone to skimmer separation because the original bonding materials age and lose elasticity. A pool that is 25 or 30 years old with the original skimmer has usually seen enough thermal cycling and ground movement for the joint to begin failing.

How We Confirm It

During the underwater inspection we go to each skimmer and apply leak detection dye at the throat, around the full perimeter of the skimmer body, and at the bottom pipe connection. If the skimmer is separating, the dye is drawn visibly through the gap, confirming active water movement at that exact location. We also pipe test the skimmer line to rule out a plumbing failure behind the skimmer as an additional source.

Jeff David, Leak and Subsurface Locators

Skimmer separation is the first thing I check when a homeowner tells me the pool always drops to the same level at or near the skimmer. It is the single most common leak I find. The dye test is the fastest confirmation, I apply the dye at the skimmer bond and within seconds I can see whether it is being drawn into the gap or sitting still.

The repair is straightforward when the gap is caught early. What makes it expensive is waiting, a small separation becomes a larger one over time, and a larger one may require skimmer replacement rather than sealing. Call when you first notice the pattern. Do not wait for the second pool season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a skimmer leak on its own or is it always part of a bigger problem?

A skimmer separation is its own independent leak source. It does not necessarily mean anything else is wrong with the pool. That said, we always test the full pool during the visit, a skimmer separation can occur at the same time as a plumbing failure or a shell crack, and we do not stop testing after finding the first source.

Can a skimmer leak be repaired without draining the pool?

In most cases yes. The pool can be partially lowered to below the skimmer level for the repair without a full drain. We assess the repair requirements after confirming the leak during the detection visit.

How long does a skimmer leak repair last?

A properly executed skimmer seal on a stable separation can last many years. If the underlying cause, soil movement, thermal stress, is ongoing, the repair may need to be revisited over time. We explain the expected longevity based on what we see when we confirm the source.
