The city incorporated in 1920 and took its current name, Boynton Beach, in 1941. Early growth was tied to agriculture, coastal settlement, and rail access, and the historic schoolhouse at Ocean Avenue and Seacrest Boulevard remains a centerpiece of the city's identity.
Boynton Beach's story on paper begins in 1898, when Byrd Spilman Dewey and Fred S. Dewey filed the original plat for the Town of Boynton. The community that grew from it was built on agriculture, coastal settlement, the labor of early workers, and the arrival of rail access, the same forces that shaped most of South Florida's coastal towns, but here they produced one of the county's most enduring cities.
One of the city's most important historic sites sits at Ocean Avenue and Seacrest Boulevard. A school opened in that area in 1900, and a later 1913 school building became a fixture of the city's historic identity. Today the Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Learning Center carries that education history forward, one of the clearest physical links between the modern city and its pioneer beginnings.
Boynton Beach never became one uniform place, and that is its defining trait. It grew east to west across more than a century: coastal and older neighborhoods near the original townsite, mid-century suburbs in the middle, and newer planned communities toward the Turnpike. The city sits between Delray Beach and Lake Worth Beach, two culturally distinct neighbors, and has developed its own arts district and downtown redevelopment momentum in recent years. A Tri-Rail station connects residents north to West Palm Beach and south toward Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
A city that has been building homes since the Deweys filed their plat in 1898 ends up with every era of pool construction in its backyards. In the older east-side neighborhoods, a pool may have been resurfaced, patched, or re-plumbed more than once over the decades.
