Who to Call and Why It Matters
Your pool service company may be the first to notice something is wrong. They may see the water level dropping between visits, the autofill running more than it should, the chemicals not holding the way they normally do, or the equipment behaving differently. That information is useful. It is a starting point.
But noticing that water is disappearing is not the same as finding where it is going. A pool can lose water from dozens of different places - the skimmer, a return fitting, a light niche, the main drain, underground plumbing, a crack in the shell, the equipment pad, a previous repair that failed, or the spa. Ruling those in and out requires a systematic evaluation with the right equipment and training.
At Leak and Subsurface Locators, pool leak detection is all we do. Jeff David is a licensed Florida pool contractor (CPC1457277) who has built a company specifically around finding leaks and documenting them accurately. We do not show up and guess based on one wet spot. We look at the pool as a complete system.
The goal is a clear answer: is the pool leaking above normal evaporation, where is the water going, and what needs to happen next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my pool service company find the leak?
Your pool service company may identify some leak locations during routine service. However, most pool service companies do not carry the specialized equipment - pressure manifolds, hydrophones, ground microphones, trace gas systems, proprietary dye testing - that systematic leak detection requires. If your service tech suspects a leak, the next call is to a leak detection specialist.
How do I know if my pool is leaking or just losing water to evaporation?
The bucket test is the standard starting point. Fill a bucket to pool water level, place it on a pool step with the pump running normally and the autofill turned off, and compare the levels after 24-48 hours. If the pool loses significantly more than the bucket, that points to a leak rather than evaporation. Call us to schedule the evaluation.
