Can a Small Crack in My Pool Cause a Leak?

Yes. Small cracks can cause significant water loss. Here is what you need to know.

Yes. A small crack in the pool shell, skimmer, light niche, or around a fitting can cause significant water loss over time.

The size of the crack visible from the surface does not always reflect how much water is moving through it. Even a hairline crack that is hard to see can allow the pool to lose inches of water per day if it is in the right location and constantly submerged.

Why Cracks Are Hard to Evaluate Without Testing

In pebble finish, mosaic tile, and older pools, cracks can be hidden behind the finish layer. A crack in the shell may not show at all from the surface, or may look minor when the actual water path behind it is larger.

Dye testing can help reveal whether a crack is active -- whether water is actually moving through it -- rather than just cosmetically visible. Not every crack leaks, and not every leak comes from a visible crack.

What Honest Leak Detection Looks Like

At Leak and Subsurface Locators, we use underwater inspection, dye testing, and documentation to evaluate cracks found during the inspection. We are honest about what can and cannot be confirmed. Some cracks in pebble or mosaic finish pools cannot be fully pinpointed without more invasive work, and in those cases the honest answer may be that the shell or finish requires waterproofing.
